In the treble clef, notes are named using the first seven letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. These notes sit on either the five lines or the four spaces of the staff.
Musicians use simple memory tricks to remember their exact positions from bottom to top:
The Space Notes
The four spaces spell out the word FACE.
- 1st space (bottom): F
- 2nd space: A
- 3rd space: C
- 4th space (top): E
The Line Notes
The five lines use the acronym Every Good Boy Does Fine.
- 1st line (bottom): E
- 2nd line: G (The treble clef curls around this line, which is why it is also called the "G Clef")
- 3rd line: B
- 4th line: D
- 5th line (top): F
Notes Just Outside the Staff
Notes can also sit right below or above the five main lines:
- Space below the 1st line: D
- Middle C: Sits on its own little ledger line directly below that D.
- Space above the 5th line: G
